Mudau Tshilidzi |  | | | Mudau Tshilidzi | Tshilidzi is 2.5 years old. She lives at Fondwe Village with her mother, two older sisters aged 16 and 19, and two older brothers age 9 and 13. Her mother, Cate, was diagnosed HIV positive in 2007 and in 2008 started on ARV treatment. Tshilidzi has not been tested for HIV and her mother is not willing for her to take the HIV test. Tshilidzi's ears are always weeping and painful. Her brother of 9 years old is HIV positive and attends ARV workshops for children with HIV. The mother is a member of the support group for people living with HIV/AIDS. The father abandoned the family, and when he was at home, abused them.

Tshiovhe Unarine |  | | | Tshiovhe Unarine | Unarine is 5 years old. She lives at Tshirenzheni village with her mother, older brother and older sister, grand parents and two uncles. Her father died in 2005 of renal failure while the mother was pregnant with Una. Her mother is unemployed and this family of 8 survives on a meagre government child grant and old age pension.

Sibadela Musiki |  | | | Sibadela Musiki | Musiki is 3 years old. He lives in Dopeni village with his mother and 3 older sisters. His parents divorced in 2006 when his mother was pregnant. At the same time she was diagnosed HIV+. Luckily Musiki was born HIV- because his mother took the Neviraphine medicine which prevents mother to child transmission. The mother is on the ARV drug regime and is a member of the VMS support group. His father has a part-time job and he sometimes pays maintenance. The mother is unemployed and is dependent on the government grant of her 2 children.

Musekwa Takalani |  | | | Musekwa Takalani | Taki is 8 years old. She lives at Tshirolwe Village with her granny, an older brother and father. She was born HIV positive and in 2006 started on an ARV drug regime. Taki's mother died in 2004 of AIDS. Her father, who is also HIV positive, is unemployed. He once threatened to kill Takalani's granny and the two children to get their child support grant. The children and granny ran away and slept at the police station. The father was arrested, however, Takalani was not able to comply with her ARV treatment during that time and became ill. She fought back and is currently doing well.

Malise AnzaAnza is 6 years old. He lives at Tshikombani village with his mother, older brother and an older sister. In 2008 his father died in a car accident. He and his mother were both diagnosed HIV+ in 2009 as Anza was always sickly. They are both on the ARV s drug regime, and are memebers of VMS support group for children and women living with HIV& AIDS. This family survives with a meagre government grant only. Anza is having kidney and liver problems, and has to travel to Polokwane fairly often for treatment.

Matumba Vhukhudo |  | | | Matumba Vhukhudo | Vhukhudo is 2.5 years old. She lives at Dopeni Village with her grandmother, Ema Nedzanani, two older sisters aged 18 and 16 years, and an older brother 7 years old. Her father died in 2007 and mother in 2009. Both became sick and died after two weeks. Vhukhudo is currently healthy, loves school and playing with other children. The grandmother is suffers from high blood pressure and the children are not yet receiving any foster care support.

Revale Netshedzo |  | | | Revale Netshedzo | Netshi is 4.5 years old. He lives at Milaboni village with his mother, 2 older sisters and an older brother. His mother, Rieneth was diagnosed HIV positive in 2004 when she was pregnant with Netshi. Fortunately, Netshi is HIV negative because his mother was given the drug Nevirapine. Netshi's mother is on ARV treatment. In 2007 his father who was also HIV positive, died of pneumonia. Rieneth is unemployed although she tries to make a living by sewing and selling clothes.

Mphephu Lebogang |  | | | Mphephu Lebogang | Lebogang is 3 years old. She lives at Milaboni village with her granny and 2 aunts. Her mother was only 19 years old when she died in 2008. The cause of death on the death certificate was natural causes (which means AIDS !!). The father is unknown. The granny is currently unemployed and they survive on a government child grant of R250,00 (approximately $33 US dollars).

Innocent Phupheli |  | | | Innocent Phupheli | Phupheli is 7 years old. He lives at Tshithuthuni Village with his mother and two older brothers aged 14 & 19. His mother, Maria, was diagnosed HIV positive in 2002 when she was pregnant with Phupheli. She was given the drug Nevirapine that prevented transmission to Phupheli. He was born HIV free and his mother is currently on ARV treatment. She is a single mother and unemployed.

Langalanga Wavhudi |  | | | Langulanga Wavhudi | Wavhudi is 2 years old. She lives at Tshivhilidulu village with her mother, father, an older sister and 3 half sisters. Both her parents are unemployed as her father lost his job because he was very sick for a long time. His first wife died of HIV/AIDS related diseases. His second wife, Thendi and mother of Wavhudi is a volunteer working in VMS vegetable garden. This family survives on government child grant only.

Thinga's mother died from cardiac arrest in 2004 when he was born. The father is unemployed and all the children are currently attending school. The granny helps the father look after the children but she also has other family members to take care of.

The mother was declared unfit by the court because she often leaves the children alone with no food and no one to take care of them. Although she is now out of prison, she is unemployed, occasionally she visits the children.

Budeli ThinazwangaThina is 5 years old. He lives at Takalani Orphanage in Siloam with his 3 older brothers who attend other schools because they are in higher grades. The mother is single and is unemployed. The children were taken from her because she was not looking after them, misusing the government grant money and not giving the children food. She receives no support from the children s fathers. She occasionally visits the children at the orphanage.

Nekhondela Dowelani |  | | | Nekhondela Dowelani | Nekhondela is almost 2 years old. He lives at Hamphaila Village with his parents, one older brother age 19 and two older sisters ages 18 & 13. His mother was diagnosed HIV positive in 2001 and is taking ARV treatment. His father and 13 year old sister are also HIV positive. The older sister attends the ARV workshops for children living with HIV at the school. Nekhondela was very fortunate because he was not infected with HIV because his mother took Nevirapine.

Livhaini Omphulusa Elisa |  | | | Livhalani Omphulusa | Elisa is 7 years old. She lives at Ha-mulelu which is about 12km from VMS, with her mother, aunt and 2 cousins. She and her mother were diagnosed HIV+ in 2005 after her mother was sick for a long time, and in 2006 they started the ARV drug regime.The mother lost her job because of always being sick and now that she is stronger she is working on the VMS bead making project, although unfortunately not making any money yet.

Kutama Ofhani |  | | | Kutama Ofhani | Ofhani is 8 years old. He lives in Fondwe village, in a family of 8 people, including his mother, granny and two uncles. His mother was diagnosed HIV+ in 2008 after being sick for a long time and in 2009 she started the ARV treatment. Ofhani is a healthy boy and the HIV test results were negative. His father is staying somewhere else and does not pay any maintenance as he is unemployed. The mother is not working but she is a member of the VMS bead making project.

Mpho is 5 years old. This is the sister of Ramunenyiwa Mutshidzi, listed below. Mpho lives in Siloam village at the Takalani Orphanage. She has a younger sister who is 3 years old. Their mother is unemployed and she abandoned them in November 2009. She used to leave them at home alone for the weekends without any food. By the time the social worker found them they had been alone for a week. The granny who used to look after these children had just died. So Mpho, who was 4 years old at that time, was looking after her younger sister who was 2 years old... Since they have been at Takalani, the mother has paid them one visit.

Mushidzi is 4 years old. She lives at Takalani Orphanage in Siloam village. Her mother died in 2008 and she was left in the care of her stepfather. The stepfather was physically abusing the little girl until the case was reported, and when the social worker went to find the child she had a bad head injury, which has since healed. This child has no other family that we are aware of.

Mutshidzi is 3 years old. She lives in Siloam village at the Takalani Orphanage. She has an older sister who is 5 years old. Their mother is unemployed and abandoned them in November 2009. Tshavhungwe is 6 years old. She lives in Khalavha Village with her mother, an older brother, age 11, her grandmother who is HIV positive and started the ARV drug regime this year, and an uncle 16 years old.
In 2005 Tshavhungwe was hit by a passing car when getting off a taxi and is paralyzed from the waist down. She has to be carried to a pick-up point and then uses a donated wheelchair at school. Every three months she must travel to Johannesburg for rehabilitation.

He lives in Fondwe Village with his mother, father, an older brother age 5, and an older sister age 10. Mariba was diagnosed HIV positive in 2007. He is not yet on ARV treatment because his cd4 count is considered too high. Although the entire family is HIV positive, only the mother is on anti-retroviral drugs. She attends monthly support group and works in the community garden. The father does not have a permanent job. The school helps with food parcels and transport money for hospital visits.

He lives at Mandala Village with his mother, three siblings and grandmother. Khathu's mother was diagnosed HIV positive in 2006 when she was pregnant with him. Khathu is not HIV positive because his mother was given Nevirapine. The grandmother took them in when Khathu was two months old because the mother was very sick and unable to care for him.

He lives at Tshivhilidulu Village with his mother and grandmother. The mother is a teenager who is mentally challenged and the father is not in a position to look after them. He is unemployed and stays with his parents. The mother had to drop out of school and cannot attend the special school, as it is too far away. The grandmother is HIV positive and is also mentally challenged. She is a member of the support group at the school and also volunteers in the school garden.

The mother is also looking after the two children of her late sister who died of AIDS. This sister had a good job, and had been the sole breadwinner of the family.

He lives in Fondwe village with his parents, an older sister age 10, and a younger brother 2 years old. Thalu was diagnosed HIV positive in March 2007 together with the rest of his family. They are not on ARV treatment yet because their CD4 count is considered too high (they are not sick enough!!). Thalu's father does not have a permanent job.
