HIV/AIDS

South Africa has the fifth highest prevalence of
HIV in the world, with 5.5 million or 18.8% of
the population estimated to be infected.

Life expectancy at birth is 43 years.

Half a million South Africans infected with the
virus are currently in need of antiretroviral therapy.

The estimated number of AIDS related death
in 2005 ranged between 320,000 and 520,000.
This is still seven years away from peaking in
terms of the numbers of projected AIDS related deaths.

The worst affected children - those in deeply
impoverished households - are losing their
parents, their families, and their social network.

The lack of a social security net and high levels
of unemployment mean poor households and
communities slip further into poverty and
deprivation. Invariably the burden of coping
falls on women, particularly girls and
grandmothers.
